BREAKING: Lasith Malinga named captain of the T20 team

Rumours about Mathews leading the T20 side in the 2016 WT20 have been put to rest.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced today that Lasith Malinga will lead Sri Lanka in T20Is until the end of the WT20 2016 in India. This means that the right-arm fast bowler would also lead Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup tournament which is to be held in Bangladesh.

News had emerged that there was a probable attempt to coronate Angelo Mathews as the captain of all three formats ahead of the Asia Cup. But all rumors have been allayed and Angelo Mathews is set to be the vice-captain of the T20 side.

Dinesh Chandimal will lead the Sri Lankan team in the three-match T20I series against India in February as both Malinga and Mathews are unavailable due to injuries.

Lasith Malinga has led Sri Lanka in eight T20I matches winning five of them. He was also instrumental in Sri Lanka winning the WT20 in 2014, leading the side to three straight wins in the tournament, which also included the semi-final and the final. Incidentally, Malinga would become the third Sri Lankan after Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene to lead Sri Lanka in two WT20s.
